The Challenge
Since the industrial revolution, unsustainable attitudes towards energy production and efficiency, resource extraction, land use and management have led to climate change, degradation of the natural environment and declines in biodiversity.
The capitalist system is now reversing this trend – philosophies of value creation have shifted from extraction to regeneration of the stock of the Earth’s natural resources. It is not possible to achieve “net zero” without harnessing our oceans, soil and forests as natural carbon sinks.
Substantial transformation at a scale not previously seen is required to achieve the goal of “net zero”, supporting the goal of the United Nations-sponsored Paris Agreement.

The Opportunity
The opportunity is not only to generate commercial returns from an unprecedented structural shift towards a greener future, but to manage the Earth’s natural assets in a way that preserves and restores those assets for future generations.
Despite surging demand from corporates and investors, there is a supply and demand imbalance between capital allocated for impact investments and true impact investment opportunities such as natural capital. Additionally, many natural capital investment opportunities lack the sophistication and detailed research necessary for investors to make an informed investment decision.
Gaia is expanding the natural capital asset class by filling the information void and scaling projects and companies that have the potential to deliver long term economic value and a true environmental impact.
