Since the industrial revolution, unsustainable attitudes towards energy production and efficiency, resource extraction, land use and management have led to climate change, degradation of the natural environment and declines in biodiversity.
The capitalist system is now reversing this trend – philosophies of value creation have shifted from extraction to regeneration of the stock of the Earth’s natural resources. It is not possible to achieve “net zero” without harnessing our oceans, soil and forests as natural carbon sinks.
Substantial transformation at a scale not previously seen is required to achieve the goal of “net zero”, supporting the goal of the United Nations-sponsored Paris Agreement.
